Bewi Extinction Exposure Meter
Complete with case.
This is a vintage BEWI extinction-type light meter from the 1920s or 1930s, used to determine camera settings. The device works by having the user look through the viewfinder to find the least visible letter, then adjusting the dial to find the corresponding shutter speed and aperture. It is constructed from metal, plastic, and glass, and comes with a protective leather case. These instruments were produced in Germany and Austria and were popular before photoelectric meters became common.
This vintage BEWI extinction-type light meter is universally compatible with any camera that allows for manual control over aperture and shutter speed. Because it is a completely mechanical and optical calculator with no electrical circuits, it does not physically connect to or rely on a camera body.
Film and Camera System Compatibility
Fully Compatible Cameras: Any vintage or modern manual camera—such as vintage film SLRs, rangefinders, twin-lens reflex (TLR) systems, medium format, large format, and even modern digital cameras in Manual (M) mode.
Film Speed Systems (Scheiner vs. ISO/ASA): These 1930s-era meters usually use old European film speed scales like Scheiner (°Sch) or early DIN instead of modern ISO/ASA.
