The Benbo Trekker Mk 3 (often referred to as the Benbo 3) is a versatile, lightweight aluminium tripod specifically designed for outdoor, landscape, and macro photography. Its defining feature is a unique swivel joint system that allows the legs and centre column to be independently positioned at virtually any angle, enabling shooting from ground level up to its maximum height
Key Features of the Benbo 3
Heavy-Duty All-Metal Construction: Unlike modern versions, the original Benbo 3 is significantly heavier and uses thicker-gauge aluminium tubing designed to support heavy medium-format or large-format cameras.
Independent 360-Degree Leg Movement: Each leg can swing through a full 360 degrees independently of the others. This allows you to set the tripod up on vertical surfaces, such as a tree or wall, or in extremely awkward rocky terrain.
Swivelling Centre Column: The center column can also swing through 180 or even 360 degrees, allowing it to act as a horizontal boom for macro photography or to reach over obstacles.
Waterproof Lower Leg Sections: A hallmark of the Benbo design is that the lower leg tubes are sealed. This allows you to stand the tripod in water, mud, or snow up to the main joint without damaging the internal mechanisms or trapping grit.
Friction-Based Main Joint: On the original “3” models, the locking faces are usually smooth rather than geared. This requires a strong “Oooomph” on the locking handle to ensure the legs don’t slip under a heavy load.
Reversible Centre Column: The column can be removed and inserted upside down, placing the camera mount between the legs for ultra-low-level ground photography.
