The D40 is equipped with a DX format CCD image sensor with an effective resolution of 6.1 megapixels and has a sophisticated image processing engine. Both together provide exceptionally detailed image reproduction with natural, vibrant colours.

Nikon’s exclusive 3D color matrix measurement II allows precise exposure even in difficult lighting conditions. With the help of an automatic sensitivity, the light sensitivity of the image sensor can be adjusted in the range of ISO 200 to 1,600, so that even in low ambient light can achieve sharp and correctly exposure shots.

With the D40, Nikon introduces its lightest, most compact and user-friendly digital SLR camera yet. The D40 combines the flexibility of a camera system with interchangeable lenses with the handiness of an exceptionally small and lightweight camera body and is particularly aimed at beginners in digital SLR photography, which have previously photographed with digital compact cameras or analogue SLR cameras.

Built-in “user manual”.

An absolute highlight of the newly developed D40 operating concept is the high functionality transparency for the user. With a help button, the “built-in instruction manual is activated. You can use it to retrieve explanatory help texts for all active menu options/functions, which greatly accelerate the learning process when handling the camera. Frequent reference in the manual for the camera is unnecessary. When selecting important camera functions, the camera also supports the user with clear sample images when selecting the appropriate option and thus meets a preview function. The menus are divided in colour and are shown in large font, which makes it easy to navigate through the camera options.

Easy to use.

The D40 stands further for high transport comfort due to compact dimensions and low weight. In the design of the D40, attention was paid to a manageable number of controls and excellent ergonomics, which makes handling the camera particularly easy and leads to quick image success. The bright and sharp viewfinder with 0.8x magnification allows for an exact selection of the image section. After recording, the large high-resolution 2.5-inch LCD colour monitor ensures clear and clear image reproduction and allows precise assessment of sharpness and exposure of a recording at up to 19x magnification.

The new “image editing” menu of the D40 offers the possibility of uncomplicated and quick image post-processing via the camera. This increases the “fun factor” of the D40 and ensures a larger creative scope – even without a computer. The image editing menu of the D40 includes e.g. the functions “D-Lighting”, “Red-Eye Correction” and “Trimming”. Creative functions include “picture mounting”, “compact image”, “monochrom” (black white, sepia, blue) and “filter effects” (skylight, warm colour, colour balance).
