The Taylor-Hobson Cooke 4 1/4 inch (108mm) f/6.5 Series VIIb is a vintage, highly regarded wide-angle anastigmat photographic lens produced by Taylor, Taylor & Hobson in Leicester, England
Overview and Specifications
Type: Wide-angle anastigmat lens designed for field and architectural photography.
Focal Length: 4 1/4 inches (approximately 108mm).
Maximum Aperture: f/6.5 (though physical production samples were sometimes engraved as f/6.3).
Construction: Compact and lightweight 3-element or symmetrical layout optimized to cover wider fields of view on plate/large-format cameras.
Production Era: Manufactured from 1924 through the 1960s
Key Characteristics
Aesthetic & Performance: According to historical collector notes and technical manuals documented in the Cooke Compedium, the Series VIIb line was marketed “for wide angle work of all kinds”. When stopped down, it delivers exceptional sharpness across the designated film plane.
Build: Built in a rigid mechanical barrel equipped with a manual iris diaphragm, frequently used on classic field, press, and large-format glass plate cameras.
Large Format & Vintage Mounting
Historically, this lens was designed as a barrel lens to be mounted onto large-format wooden lens boards(such as for Thornton-Pickard, Graflex, or quarter-plate cameras)
The Flange: It typically requires its original brass mounting flange (a threaded collar) which is screwed directly onto a wooden or metal lens board. The rear male threads of the lens barrel screw into this flange.
Shutters: Because it is a barrel lens, it does not have a built-in central shutter. To shoot with it traditionally, you either mount it in front of a camera with a focal-plane shutter (like a Speed Graphic), use a front-mounted roller-blind shutter (like a Thornton-Pickard), or mount the glass elements into a vintage Prontor/Compur/Copal #00 or #0 shutter assembly if custom machined
