The Zorki 1 Type D is a classic Soviet 35mm rangefinder camera produced by the KMZ factory between 1953 and 1954. Built as a direct, rugged derivative of the pre-war Leica II, it combines vintage mechanical precision with distinctive Soviet styling.

Key Features and Identification

Dual-Language Engraving: The defining feature of the Type D is the top plate, which displays the “Zorki” name in both cursive Cyrillic (Зоркий) and Latin scripts for export markets

Shutter Button Collar: This variant features a raised, threaded collar around the shutter button, allowing the attachment of a standard mechanical cable release.

Bottom-Loading Design: Like the classic Leicas, the camera lacks a swinging back door. Film is loaded entirely through the bottom after removing the baseplate

M39 Screw Mount: It uses the Leica Thread Mount (LTM), making it compatible with a vast ecosystem of vintage Soviet and Western lenses.

Important Operation Rule

Shutter Cocking: You must always wind the film advance knob to cock the shutter before changing the shutter speed. Changing the speed before winding can permanently damage the camera’s internal timing gears.

The standard 50mm f/3.5 lens found on a 1953–1954 Zorki 1 Type D camera is almost certainly the Industar-22 (or its direct successor, the early collapsible Industar-50). These lenses are Soviet optical formulas based entirely on the legendary Carl Zeiss Tessar and styled heavily after the collapsible Leitz Elmar 50mm.Because of its incredibly sharp rendering in the centre of the image, the Soviet photo industry nicknamed this optical design the “Eagle’s Eye” (Соколиный глаз)
