Ross London Rapid Symmetrical 8×5 Brass Lens

The Ross London Rapid Symmetrical 8×5 lens with serial number 42262 is a vintage Victorian brass photographic lens manufactured by Ross (optics) in London around 1883–1884

      Lens Overview & Specifications
Type: Rapid rectilinear (symmetrical double achromat configuration designed to correct for distortion and lateral chromatic aberration)
Format Coverage: 8 x 5 inches (landscape/plate format of the era)
Aperture: Maximum aperture of approximately f/8, configurable down to f/65 via Waterhouse stops (or an iris diaphragm, depending on the specific sub-variant mount
Focal Length: Designed for 8×5 plate cameras, typically around 8 to 9 inches for this specific coverage class.
Convertible Feature: According to historical documentation on the Rapid Rectilinear design, the rear cell of the lens could be unscrewed and used separately as a long-focus single landscape lens with roughly double the focal length of the combined doublet.
Serial number 42262 places production squarely in the mid-1880s during the height of production for Ross & Co.’s symmetrical series, just before the introduction of later anastigmat designs

The lens is in good used cosmetic condition, please see photos provided.
      Optically shows dust.
